Aunque originalmente fue fundada en el año 1640 como la Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, el pueblo cubano desde temprano expresó gran devoción por el Santo Cristo [la imagen de Jesús crucificado], que estaba expuesta allí para veneración. La presente Iglesia del Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje fue edificada  en 1755, pero los libros parroquiales datan del Siglo XVII. La advocación del Buen Viaje, que se encuentra por todo el mundo hispano, viene de la tradición católica española en que al Cristo crucificado se le llama del Buen Viaje porque a él se encomiendan los viajeros.  La iglesia está situada cerca de lo que era la Puerta de Tierra de la muralla habanera, por donde salían los viajeros hacia los caminos llenos de peligro. También se dice que, siendo La Habana puerto de mar, acudían allí los marinos que necesitaban un patrono y un lugar donde rezar para protección.

   En la fachada de la iglesia se nota la simplicidad de sus dos torres hexagonales. La torre de la Epístola tenía el reloj, de lo que sólo queda su campana. La torre del Evangelio luce cuatro campanas muy sonoras, la más antigua fundida en el año 1515. Es de notar también el arco de su entrada principal. Entrando en la Iglesia se nota enseguida su amplitud, en particular la nave central y su bello artesonado Mudéjar y, finalmente, el Santo Cristo, imagen antiquísima y objeto de la devoción popular por más de tres siglos. Tradicionalmente la iglesia del Cristo era la última estación del Vía Crucis cuaresmal, que venía de la antigua iglesia de San Francisco por la Calle de la Amargura. La iglesia del Cristo y su plaza acogían a los penitentes con su ambiente íntimo e informal para darles el descanso que tanto deseaban.

   Although originally founded in 1640 as the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, the Cuban people soon showed great devotion for the Crucified Christ, whose image was exposed there for veneration. The present church was built in 1755 but the parish books begin in the seventeenth century. The advocations Buen Viaje (good voyage) is a title given to the crucified Lord within the Spanish Catholic tradition. It means good trip - good voyage. In our case, those who went on a trip stopped there to pray. The church is close by the old city wall, where there was found the Puerta de Tierra [Gate Facing Land] of the city. Travel in the country side was very dangerous then. Equally dangerous was sea travel. Havana was an important sea port. Seafarers in need of a patron and a place to pray for protection also stopped there. Thus the church became well known to travelers. The baroque façade is notable for the simplicity of its twin hexagonal towers. The tower of the Epistle had a clock, of which only the bell remains. The tower of the Gospel has four sonorous bells. The oldest of these was cast in the year 1515. Worthy of note is also the deep flaring arch in its entryway and as one enters, one notices the nave with its beautiful hispano-moorish [mudejar] ceiling. Finally, the image of Christ crucified is worthy of note. This is an ancient crucifix which for more than three centuries has been the object of the people's devotion. Traditionally, this church was the last station on the Lenten Via Crucis [Way of the Cross]. This was a procession which started at the old St Francis church and proceeded to el Santo Cristo through Calle de la Amargura [Street of Bitterness]. The church and its Plaza received the penitents in need of rest. It is an intimate setting, a charming quality which characterizes this corner of Old Havana.
